Incorporated on April 10, 1911, after separating from Brick Township, the borough's name is derived from the Unami language of the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, with interpretations including "frog ground" or "sand place." As of 2025, Mantoloking has a population of approximately 334 residents. The community is renowned for its pristine beaches, historic shingle-style architecture, and the Mantoloking Yacht Club, which offers sailing opportunities on Barnegat Bay. Despite its small size, Mantoloking provides a tranquil coastal experience, attracting visitors to its serene environment and well-preserved natural beauty.​
